When Five Horse Johnson formed back in the year of 1995, and announced themselves as a Blues Band, their friends may have thought they had cause to worry. After all, it is a well-worn banality that white boys can only ever hope to mimic the blues, isn’t it? The band has always understood that the Blues isn’t a formula, but a way of looking at the world; their blues is a dirty, sensual thing (it ain’t for nothin’ that their new catalog number is 69, people!), and while retaining a more than healthy dose of humor, they are completely and 100% free of the goofy hardy-har-har trappings of some of the other wannabes out there trying to be “bluesy” (hear that, J. Spencer?).

Over the past decade, Five Horse Johnson has happily and thankfully proven the doubters wrong. Never apers, over the course of 6 albums, Five Horse Johnson has honed out a niche all their own, combining their love and respect for the Blues, Classic Rock and other, less dog-eared influences of their youth to become one of the most loved and respected bands in the Stoner Rock community. Always a right freight train live, the band has spent a lot of time on the road with the likes of Clutch, Halfway To Gone, etc., gathering fans, friends, and drinking partners all over the world.

Memphis Sheiks (1994) -Slow-Cooked Pig Meat

Artist: Memphis Sheiks
Album: Slow Cooked Pig Meat
Released: 1994
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 92 MB

Delta Joe Sanders grew up on Glover Plantation in Desoto County, Mississippi. His lyrics, often deceptively simple, range from humourous anectdotes of love-gone-wrong to insightful reflections of the struggle to survive in a fast pace world far removed from the earthiness of the Mississippi Delta. Joe describes his songwriting this way: "A song starts working on me, sort of how pearls are made. They just start agitating. . . "
In 1980, Joe began playing professionallly in a country band in Mississippi. It was only a matter of time before he decided to follow his heart and get back to the blues. For most of the 80's he played solo gigs in Memphis, where he resided until his father's death while Joe wa in high school. Knowing the difficulty of finding musicians dedicated to traditional delta blues, Joe was content to play acoustic solo gigs until one night in 1991 when Robert Nighthawk II asked to sit in on harmonica. The chemistry between the bluesmen was so strong that they have been playing together ever since. A high profile musician in the Memphis blues scene, Robert Nighthawk II has fronted The Wampus Cats since forming the band in 1978. Having recorded at Inside Sounds with The Wampus Cats, Robert invited Joe to the studio in 1993 to cut a few tracks. The result was Slow-Cooked Pig Meat, the debut recording of The Memphis Sheiks.

Collard Greens & Gravy (1999) -Collard Greens & Gravy

Artist: Collard Greens & Gravy
Album: Collard Greens & Gravy
Released: 1999
Quality: mp3 VBR ~200
Size: 92 MB

"Ian's soulful vocals, authentic phrasing and effective harp playing are the first thing that impress about this act. But on closer listening we disciver the tight (rhythmically and sonically) playing of James. His style is a lesson in economy of playing and his use of vibrato, which could be a distracton in the hands of a lesser guitarist, brings us memories of those old Excello recordingsof the 1950's. Anthony ofers a wonderful free time to the groove, and his use of the 'djembe' brings a marvellously different perspective to the groove. Rather than anchor the band, his percussion-like playing, rather than strict drumming allows for some excellent interplay......." ~John Durr, Black Market Music

Since its release in 1999, this self-titled debut CD has won Album of the Year, Band of the Year and Male Performer of the Year at the Vic /Tas Awards and Best Song and Best Band Awards at the Goulburn Festival Australian Blues Awards

Ted Heath (2008) -Swing Is King, Vol. 1 & 2

Artist: Ted Heath
Album: Swing Is King, Vol. 1 & 2
Released: 2008
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 184 MB

Ted Heath was one of the most famous big-band leaders in Great Britain of the 1950s. His bands played modernized swing music that was always danceable but occasionally had worthwhile solos played in the tradition. Heath started out playing tenor horn before he switched to trombone when he was 14. He spent a period playing as a street musician and then was discovered by Jack Hylton, who hired him for his band. Heath had long stints as a sideman with a variety of top dance bands, including ensembles led by Bert Firman (1924-1925), Hylton again (1925-1927), Ambrose (1928-1936), Sydney Lipton (1936-1939), and Geraldo (1939-1944). Heath began leading his own big band in 1944 and, through regular appearances on the radio, tours, and concerts, he soon became a household name in England. The innovations of bebop were largely ignored in favor of playing swing-oriented charts, although some of Heath's soloists (particularly Ronnie Scott, Danny Moss, Don Rendell, and Kenny Baker) became notable as jazz players. Heath, whose band was always of high musicianship and used "Listen to the Music" as its theme song, also became well known in the United States, visiting the U.S. several times starting in 1956. His orchestra recorded quite frequently starting in 1944 (mostly for Decca and London), including ten albums in 1959 alone. Even after Ted Heath's death in 1969, the big band continued performing and recording with a live concert cut as late as 1977.~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

The band Farmers Market was formed in Trondheim during the fall of 1991. All members where students of the Jazz Department at the Conservatory of Trondheim. At first Farmers Market started out as a free-jazz quintet, but soon found itself heading in a completely different direction; towards Bulgarian folk-music. Since then – this bulgarian music, with its odd meters, oriental scales and improvisational possibilities, has become one of the main musical ingredients of Farmers Market.

The music of Farmers Market is a mixture of Bulgarian folk music, jazz standards, popular music and humor. Farmers Market has become one of Norway’s most popular live bands, playing at all kinds of venues and festivals: jazz, folk and rock.

Four decades ago, legions of young people trekked to San Francisco and its famed Haight Asbury district, the epicenter for the youth-driven counterculture revolution that was transforming American culture. They came for peace, politics, community, love...and they came for the music, the most enduring legacy of that very special place and time. It has proven to be the element that really tells the true story of San Francisco in the 1960s.

The city, and the Bay Area overall, were exploding with spectacular talent, including pre-eminent icons the Grateful Dead, Santana and the Jefferson Airplane as well as countless other acts that brought San Francisco's expansive sonic vibe to national, and ultimately worldwide, prominence. And, just as aspiring hippies and youthful seekers of summer lovin' flocked westward to savor the Golden State's golden age, musical talent from across the country descended on the City by the Bay including Texan Janis Joplin and Chicagoan Steve Miller. They all added to the amazing stash of sounds that remains a cornerstone of contemporary music, and they're all featured here, superstars and lesser known talents alike.

The set's four discs explore this musical phenomenon from diverse vantage points for a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry that is both vintage and timeless.

Connie Francis (1996) -Kissin', Twistin', Goin' Where The Boys Are [5 CD set]

Artist: Connie Francis
Albums: Kissin', Twistin', Goin' Where The Boys Are [5 CD set]
Released: 1996
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 183 + 169 + 177 + 180 +167 MB

Five more CDs of Connie Francis, picking up right where Bear Family's earlier White Sox, Pink Lipstick set left off, in 1960 -- although its 300-plus minutes of music only cover the period of 1960 to 1962. By this time, Connie Francis was established as one of the top female vocal talents of her generation, and she was ready to experiment -- you hear her successful move into country music, wonderful outtakes, and never-issued songs from her early-'60s sessions. Disc one has more highlights than most greatest-hits albums, notable among them a pair of unissued "Swinging Medley" tracks, and tracks from the most daring of all of her albums, Songs to a Swinging Band. Disc two includes the rest of the Swinging Band album and also highlights her first Nashville folk-style sessions with the Jordanaires. Disc three is devoted to the rest of Francis' Nashville sessions, including her outstanding covers of movie theme songs (one of her top-selling albums) and the folk-type songs with the Jordanaires. Disc four is given over to her recordings of Irish songs and, more significantly, Francis' 1962 Twist album, including the first release of the risquй-sounding "Lovey Dovey Twist." Disc five features more of her Irish songs, as well as a number of hit singles, but the highlight is the previously "lost" original recordings from Francis' April 1962 sessions in Rome, which were believed lost when the accompaniments from those sessions were wiped and replaced by new orchestrations. This set is a major investment of time and attention, but it is rewarding -- Francis is one of those performers who seems hardly ever to have recorded anything second-rate. The booklet is lively, entertaining, and lavishly illustrated. ~ Bruce Eder

Lizz Wright (2010) -Fellowship

Artist: Lizz Wright
Albums: Fellowship
Released: 2010
Quality: mp3 VBR ~200
Size: 78 MB

The 12-track gospel-tinged record features a number of traditional songs long held sacred by Wright alongside originals by guest performers Angelique Kidjo, Me'Shell Ndegéocello, Joan as Policewoman and social activist and songwriter Dr. Bernice Reagon, among others. Produced by Brian Bacchus, Fellowship is the follow-up to Wright's 2008 record The Orchard, which "CBS News Sunday Morning" declared "one of the best albums of the year" while the Los Angeles Times called it "a creative breakthrough for Wright, whose smoldering, sensual voice now has a vision to go with it." Fellowship continues Wright's celebrated collaboration with acclaimed singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon, who co-produced the new album and wrote/performed on a number of tracks on Wright's previous release. The record features several traditional songs that Wright grew up with in church including "Amazing Grace," "Sweeping Through the City," and a gospel medley featuring "I've Got a Feeling" and "Power Lord." Wright also covers a number of songs by noted writers including "Presence of the Lord" by Eric Clapton and "In From the Storm" by Jimi Hendrix. Dr. Bernice Reagon performs on two tracks, including "I Remember, I Believe" which she composed. ~ www.amazon.com.
