Various Artists (2014) -A Psych Tribute To The Doors

Artist:  various
Albums: A Psych Tribute To The Doors  ‎
Released:  2014
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 137 MB

"I have to admit that at first I was a little skeptical when I heard about “A Psych Tribute to The Doors.” It seemed like it could have been all concept, but the execution might have fallen short. After listening to the whole CD I can say this is a tribute album that actually pays tribute to the band they’re covering.

I’ve never heard of any of the bands on the CD before, but each one has a completely different take on The Doors song they chose. They picked songs from throughout The Doors career and not just their psychedelic songs. Each band takes the songs to places The Doors might never have contemplated. The bands also exercise a lot of creativity and originality without ever completely abandoning The Doors road. There are signposts and markers for fans along the way, while each cover is quite different from The Doors original while still paying tribute to it.

Some of the standouts for me were Elephant Stone opening the CD, ripping into “L.A. Woman” with a trippy, sitar influenced cover, Camera with a completely instrumental version of “People Are Strange,“ Sons of Hippies followed the lead of The Doors and layered “The Soft Parade” creating an aural texture quite unique and different from The Doors, Wall of Death accentuating the anthemic in “Light My Fire” to heights The Doors never took it to but which legend and rock ‘n’ roll history have taken it. The Raveonettes cover of “The End” that is totally unexpected and could make the song a top 40 hit.

I didn’t find one of the songs boring or an uninteresting experiment. If you want to take a chance that isn’t really taking a chance, get “A Psych Tribute to The Doors” I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the original and creative take on The Doors. “A Psych Tribute to The Doors” comes in both CD and on vinyl. You can get it at Amazon or at Cleopatra Records.".

Various Artists (1990, 1992, 1995) -Alligator Stomp Vol.1-5: Cajun & Zydeco

Artist: various
Albums: Alligator Stomp Vol. 1-5
Release date:  1990-1995
Quality:  mp3 CBR 320
Size:  108 / 117 / 148 /118 /133 MB

“Alligator Stomp is a stellar collection of zydeco, featuring stars and lesser-known musicians. The disc is filled with great, rollicking music -- there simply isn't a weak moment on the disc, and it provides an excellent introduction to one of America's most distinctive musics.” ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

” If you're exploring the pleasures of Louisiana's zydeco and Cajun music, one of the best starting points is Rhino's excellent Alligator Stomp series of the 1990s. Vol. 2's main flaw is its failure to list recording dates -- even if Rhino couldn't find exact recording dates for all of its 18 songs, couldn't the label have at least given the years or approximate years? But the sound quality is fine, Mary Katherine Alden's liner notes are informative, and Rhino's selections are excellent. For high-energy zydeco, it's hard to go wrong with Queen Ida ("My Girl Josephine"), Buckwheat Zydeco ("Zydeco Boogaloo") or the late Clifton Chenier ("Choo Choo Ch-Boogie," "Mama Told Papa"). And for traditional Cajun music, listeners won't be disappointed by Iry LeJeune's "Evangeline Special," the Balfa Brothers' version of the familiar "Jolie Blond" or Jo-El Sonnier's hit remake of "Jambalaya," which was originally a hit for country legend Hank Williams, but has become a Cajun standard. Spanning the '40s to the '80s, this gem-laden CD shouldn't be missed.” ~ Alex Henderson

“The response to Alligator Stomp's first two volumes was so favorable that in 1992, Rhino gave us Volume 3 of the fine series. Regrettably, the CD (which runs from the 1960s to the 1980s) doesn't list either exact or appropriate recording dates. But the sound quality, detailed essay by Chuck Taggart and choice of material aren't anything to complain about. The CD illustrates are the differences between zydeco and traditional Cajun music. While Eddie LeJeune's version of "La Valse de Pont D'Amour," the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band's arrangement of "High Point Two-Step" and Lawrence "Black" Ardoin's interpretation of "You Used To Call Me" are examples of Cajun traditionalism, gems by Buckwheat Zydeco ("Hot Tamale Baby"), Clifton Chenier ("S'Mappel Fou") and his son C.J. Chenier ("My Baby Don't Wear No Shoes") show us exactly what zydeco is -- Cajun music combined with R&B/soul, blues and Creole music. When French-speaking African-Americans with Creole heritage were influenced by French-speaking Cajun-Americans with Anglo-French heritage, the potent result was zydeco. And when one plays this disc, the richness of those cultures comes alive in a major way.” ~ Alex Henderson

“If you're throwin' a Yule dance party, there isn't a better seasonal collection that features two-steps and waltzes. Of the 17 tracks, 15 were licensed from THE Cajun label, Swallow Records. Beausoleil recorded two songs especially for this compilation, the original "Christmas Bayou" and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," performed as an instrumental Cajun waltz. Four tracks are drawn from Beausoleil's fiddler/singer/leader Michael Doucet's Swallow Christmas Bayou CD, including this CD's closer, "Auld Lang Syne," which starts out traditionally slow before finishing off as a spirited two-step. Other highlights include Belton Richard's versions of "Blue Christmas" and "Please Come Home for Christmas," both sung in Cajun French: Richard's mournful vocals and the accompanying steel guitar give both songs added depth. Caveat emptor: if you hate accordions, fiddles, or just having a good time, do not buy this CD.” ~ Dennis MacDonald

“Alligator Stomp, Vol. 5 Cajun & Zydeco: the Next Generation showcases the best artists from the contemporary Cajun and zydeco scenes, including Terrance Simien, Wayne Toups, and David Doucet. Tracks from acts popular with the mainstream, such as Beausoleil's "Zydeco X," Jimmy Breaux' "Perrodin Two-Step," and Clifton Chenier's "My Baby Don't Wear No Shoes," mix with performances from newer artists and purists' favorites like Tasso's "Mon 'Tee Canaille (My Little Sly One)," Bruce Daigrepont's "Mains du Bon Dieu (The Hands of God)," and Robert Jardell's "Waltz of the Broken Family." Balfa Toujours, the Basin Brothers, Zydeco Force, and John Delafose & the Eunice Playboys round out this sampler of Cajun and zydeco music, making it a fine introduction to -- or a welcome reminder of -- the pleasures of both of these vibrant styles. “ ~ Heather Phares

Artist:  various
Albums:  Hiram and Huddie
Release date: 2009
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 134 MB

“This isn’t the typical throw-away compilation you’ll find in the two-dollar bins of your local CD outlet. Four years in the making, this Hillgrass Bluebilly recording brings together some of the best young talent to pay homage to the masters Hank Williams Sr. and Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter. The Hiram and Huddie double tribute CD brings true authenticity, while feeling like a trip down memory lane via a Twilight Zone episode of Hee Haw! The vast archives of Hank and Huddie have provided some scratchy vinyl stimulus to these bluebilly/punkabilly/psychobilly musicians who seem hell-bent on raising those legendary spirits from the ground and giving us renewed faith in real American music. You may have to go to a back-alley club, vintage hot-rod meet, or some other nostalgia event to hear them, but that’s where you’ll find these bands that are so heavily influenced by great American traditional music.”  READ FULL REVIEW by Elliott Morehardt

Various Artists (2005/2011) - Bosporous Bridges Vol.1 & 2

Artist: various
Albums: Bosporous Bridges Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 – A Wide Selection Of Turkish Jazz And Funk 1969-1978
Release date:  2005 / 2011
Quality: mp3 CBR 320 / VBR
Size:  99 /69 MB

”I don’t know all that much about Turkish jazz-funk music, but the good thing about an album like this is that you don’t really need to know the stories behind the (in this case proggy-soul) bands before they went a whole different direction, broke up, or descended into relative obscurity. The songs stand on their own without context. Or maybe the lack of context just makes the whole listening experience better, by casting that sense of mystery and myth that eludes some bands you already “know.” ~ read full review @ tinymixtapes

Various Artists (2012) -The Lemon Tape

"The mixtape, in its literal form, seems eerily obsolete. This website holds onto its visage like grim death, a point of pride among our legion. Those doomed to a world post-mixtape will exist in a sad world, one without hope springing eternal or the discovery of a band that would otherwise never hit our radar. It’s this inspirational well that The Lemon Tape is drawn from. Hell, just look at the hippie, happy cover art. It’s sunshine all over this cassette, coming straight from the unicorn and rainbow capital, Montreal. Shit! Quebec is not only seeking independence, it’s also stealing psych-pop from under the noses of capitalist Canadian swine! Oh, what joyous rays of subversion to be soaked in! The Lemon Tape is the world’s greatest mixtape, steeped in Montreal’s finest psychedelic purveyors. The lazy swoon of Brave Radar’s “A Spike” fueling a quick sprint across an overgrown field. The Capital of Plastic Daffodils pillaging 1960s Frisco and repurposing it with scratched sexuality on “Princess.” The Yesteryears tapping into a world where Jackie Browne stars Joan Baez rather than Pam Grier, the ferocity of drug trafficking replaced by a gigantic hookah soul-out. It’s all peace and love here, sugar."  (c) JSPICER

Various Artists (2009) -Femmes De Paris & Gentlemen De Paris (4CD set)

Artist:  various
Albums: Femmes De Paris & Gentlemen De Paris (4CD set)
Released:  2009
Quality: mp3 CBR 192
Size: 199 + 106 MB

”A treasure trove of female French pop from the 60s – packaged in a special case with a bonus male disc too! The 4CD package is a tremendous introduction to the hippest French pop sounds of the 60s – and goes way past the obvious stars of the time to include some cool girl singers who never got full exposure here on this side of the Atlantic. Some of the tracks on the set are versions of English-language hits, and others are original French numbers with a really hip, mod, go-go approach – very romping and groovy, with the sort of styles that are becoming the best-remembered from the time. The overall sound here is similar to some of France Gall's best work from the mid 60s – touched with traces of some of the Brit girl singers, but handled with some great instrumental touches that really make the tunes come alive. 4CD package features all 3 volumes of the Femmes De Paris series, plus a bonus disc of the Gentlemen De Paris set.”

Albums: The In-Kraut: Hip Shaking Grooves Made In Germany 1966-1974 Vol.1-3
Released:  2005 / 2006 / 2008
Quality: mp3 CBR 192 / 320
Size:  79+140+144 MB

”Marina Records proudly presents The In-Kraut - handpicked soul, beat, now sound, mod and soundtrack gems from Germany -- all recorded between 1966 and 1974. Among them many Kraut-pleasin' obscurities and long-forgotten nuggets that appear now for the very first time on CD. While the musical climate in Germany of the late '60s and early '70s was clearly dominated by horrible Schlagers, nevertheless, records of outstanding class were cut with Teutonic precision….  The guys behind these productions were usually slick jazz players and studio musicians from the tightest orchestras of the country. Somehow these middle-aged men knew how to move the Kraut and adapt their skills to the swinging sixties.

Various Artists (2009) -Psych Funk 101: 1968-1975

Artist:   various
Album: Psych Funk 101: 1968-1975 A Global Psychedelic Funk Curriculum
Released: 2009
Quality: mp3CBR 192
Size: 104 MB

”With a growing interest in -- to use a term very loosely -- "world music" and all its very permutations, heralded in part by the work of Luaka Bop and series like Ethiopiques, it makes sense that the compilation Psych-Funk 101: 1968-1975 A Global Psychedelic Funk Curriculum was sold on the Stones Throw website. Madlib and brother Oh No have both put out compilations sampling various countries' records (Indian, for the former, and Turkish, Greek, Italian, and Lebanese funk for the latter), and the underground funk scene has certainly gained a strong following in metropolises worldwide. And the compilation, put out by World Psychedelic Funk Classics, for its own part, should help inform the discussion of psychedelic funk (or, as the liner notes point out, the related but unique genre funky psychedelia), as it provides a very interesting and in-depth look at how English and American musical traditions made their way into the rest of the world. Despite its title, however, and informative liner notes, Psych-Funk 101 is not a primer in the genre, as the majority of the artists included are obscure, even in their own countries, and none of the songs have been reissued before. Still, musicians like South Korean guitarist Shin Jung Hyun ("The Man Who Must Leave") and Italian composer Armando Sciascia ("Circuito Chiuso") are both included, along with recognized artists like Ennio Morricone, Mulatu Astatke, and Omar Khorshid, doing work that may be less recognizable (Morricone, for example, as part of the Group, or Il Gruppo di Improvvisione Nuova Consonanza, the experimental composers circle of the '70s, and playing trumpet on the noise-and-effects-driven "The Feed-Back"). There are a couple of unfortunate missteps here -- Staff Carpenborg & the Electric Corona sound exactly like their name: slipshod, and the nearly two-minute introductory tack-on of Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" before Metin H Alatli's otherwise satisfying "Mevlana Boyle Dede" is completely pointless, to the point of detraction -- but the compilation is still one of the better ones out there. The tracks are funky and experimental and cool enough to appeal to a music fan looking for new sounds, but obscure enough to teach even a seasoned crate-digger a couple of things.” ~Marisa Brown, allmusic.com

Various Artists (1987) -Songs Of Protest

Artist: various
Album: Songs Of Protest
Released: 1987
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 130 MB

”Of course there are too many noteworthy songs of protest to fit onto one collection, even (or especially) if you're limiting yourself to the '60s, as Rhino does on this compilation. Still, it does a good job of mixing monster hits by Barry McGuire, Sonny Bono, Dion, the Kingston Trio, the Temptations, and Edwin Starr with more obscure cuts. Country Joe's "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag" is here, as well as Sonny Bono's self-pitying "Laugh at Me," the pre-electric Donovan cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier," and Manfred Mann's fine, overlooked cover of Dylan's "With God on Our Side." The most hard-to-find songs span the opposite ends of the spectrum. "It's Good News Week," a 1966 hit for the Jonathan King-led group Hedgehoppers Anonymous, is a lightweight catalog of social ills that retains considerable period charm. Far more earnest is Phil Ochs' "I Ain't Marching Anymore," represented here by the non-LP, electric folk-rock version released as a single in 1966. Although it made no commercial impact, it holds up to the best protest anthems of the era, both musically and lyrically.” ~ by Richie Unterberger, allmusic.com

Various Artists (2006) -From Boppin’ Hillbilly To Red Hot Rockabilly [4 CD]

Album: From Boppin’ Hillbilly To Red Hot Rockabilly [4 CD]
Released: 2006
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 121+119+117+120 MB

”This delightful and valuable set collects 120 tracks of vintage amped-up honky tonk and country boogie, beginning with releases from 1951 and stretching through to Elvis Presley's Sun years and the rockabilly explosion of 1955, effectively sketching out how what Carl Perkins called "country music with a beat" evolved and shifted into the monster known as rock & roll. Most of these sides are quite rare and many have never been anthologized before, so this box is sure to delight collectors, but the four discs also have a natural flow to them that keeps things from being too academic and makes this release a natural for a long road trip. What's apparent after only a few tracks is how much the blues was a part of hillbilly country, as was jazz via western swing, and the melting pot formation of popular American musical styles is demonstrated clearly here, even though few of these records were hits. Highlights include Forest Rye's "Wild Cat Boogie," Chuck Murphy's barrel house piano romp "They Raided the Joint," Charlie Adams' loose and fun "Cattin' Around," Rudy Gaddis' truly odd "Uranium Fever," as well as more familiar sides like Elvis Presley's "Mystery Train" and Johnny Cash's "Hey Porter." A wonderful collection that shows once again that no new musical style comes out of nowhere.” ~ Steve Leggett, allmusic.com

Various Artists (1996 / 1999) - Japanese Garage Bands of the 1960’s: GS I Love You / GS I Love You Too

Artist: various
Album: Japanese Garage Bands of the 1960’s: GS I Love You / GS I Love You Too
Released: 1996 / 1999
Quality: mp3 CBR 192
Size: 110 / 111 MB

“ the "GS" of the title is an abbreviation of "Group Sounds," as this genre was termed in Japan. Sure, you'd be challenged to find many (any?) collectors outside of Japan who had all of this stuff. This does not mean, though, that this is any less generic than many a standard '60s garage/psych/punk compilation from the U.S. or Europe, though the fidelity is certainly way better than the standard. In most respects these Japanese bands were the same as those from other lands in their catalog of fuzz riffs and basic variations of R&B-influenced rock patterns. It's a little strange to English-reared ears because of the accents, frequent mangling of English phrases, and off-kilter, bizarrely energetic transmutations of American and British rock cliches. ~Vol.1 & ~Vol.2 reviews @ allmusic.com
