Various Artists (2008) -Psychedelic Portugal (Hard Psych and Progressive Sounds From Underground Scene 1968-1974)

Artist: various
Album: Psychedelic Portugal (Hard Psych and Progressive Sounds From Underground Scene 1968-1974)
Released: 2008
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 113 MB

Hot on the heels of the 4 LP Portuguese Nuggets series comes this ‘what happened next’ comp. The time span is 1968-74, with the emphasis on the early ’70s. The only recognisable band is Quarteto IIII.
As the back sleeve liners note, Portugal took its psych cue from bands like The Soft Machine, so as you might expect, there is strong prog and experimental quotient of often semi-instrumental material. Not that this is bad – many of the tracks have pleasant pulsating rhythms and are well played.
There are a few bluesy Cream wannabes but the real psych numbers are worth getting the LP for on their own. Fluid’s ‘O Homem Sentado’ is a delicate Nirvana like tune and others from Jose Cid, Sergio Borges, Heavy Band and Beatnicks turn in some very good sounds.

Frankie & The Poolboys (2008) -Frankie & The Poolboys

Artist: Frankie & The Poolboys
Album: Frankie & The Poolboys
Released: 2008
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 99 MB

"This is quite definitely our album of the year - my God is it good! In a break from the sublime Pollo Del Mar, Ferenc Dobronyi put together Frankie & The Poolboys to rearrange some of Pollo's instrumentals into a surf style. They added new tunes and two covers. Dusty Watson (Dick Dale, Agent Orange, Slacktone) - hell, he plays with so much confidence, just totally at home with both recording and playing like a battering ram on his own, with PDM's excellent Jeff Turner on Bass, Ferenc's own guitar with guests Shigeo Naka (Surf Coasters), Dave Wronski (Slacktone), Ivan Pongracic (Madeira, Space Cossacks), Mel Waldorf (Meshugga Beach Party, Los Mel-Tones) and Bob Spalding (The Ventures). The material is superb, mainly originals except for an almost bluesy "Fugitive" and a rocked up "Land Of Hope & Glory"! "Magyara" is infectious guitars and fun loving; for "No Surf Today", think "Endless Dream" - quite Shadows actually; there's the huge drama of "A Man Called Dirt" and the truly outstanding finesse of "Finito Bandito" complete with great hi-hat work. Wrap all this up in the hands of so many experts in the field of both classic and modern day surf and you get what you expect. Just the best album we've heard in years. ~ Davy Peckett

Roky Erickson is an American singer, songwriter, harmonica player and guitarist from Texas. He was a founding member of the 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS and pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre. Erickson is one of rock and roll's most famous cult figures, perhaps as well-known for his mental illness - and his subsequent recovery after decades of erratic behavior - as for his musical talents.

Abner Jay – 4 albums

Artist: Abner Jay
Albums: The Backbone Of America Is A Mule And Cotton / One Man Band / True Story Of Abner Jay / The Original Folk Song Style Of Abner Jay
Released: 197? / 2003 / 2009 / 2010
Quality: mp3 CBR 160 /192 / FLAC / 320 /
Size: 53 / 78 / 184 / 78 MB

"Describing himself as "the last great Southern black minstrel show", Abner Jay was a travelling one-man band and revenant folk spirit who performed lugubrious versions of original blues, traditional American spirituals alongside his own material in a baritone several leagues below Johnny Cash. By slowing his source material to a laggard, awkward lollop, Jay rescued it from decades of blacked-up virtuoso mimicry, refocusing attention on its ragged edges, emotional depth and complex humanity. Jay joined Silas Greens Minstrels in 1932 on the back of a huge repertoire of banjo and old-time songs learnt from his grandfather, who had been a slave in Washington County, Georgia. He went on to lead the WMAZ Minstrels on Macon radio from 1946-56 before going solo and touring the country in his portable 'log cabin', complete with its own PA system, from where he would perform and sell cassettes and LPs, when not in residence at Tom Flynn's Plantation Restaurant in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Jay died in 1993 and since then his LPs have become almost impossible to track down. Anthony Braxton described Jay as an "American master" and his banjo, guitar and harmonica playing is every bit as idiosyncratic and unmediated by the tyranny of 'correct' technique as Braxton's own. And the tongues given voice to here are drawn from deep within the murk of centuries," David Keenan, Great Lost Recordings, The Wire, October 2003.

Mitch Kashmar (2005) -Nickels & Dimes

Artist: Mitch Kashmar
Album: Nickels & Dimes
Released: 2005
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 109 MB

Mitch Kashmar is one of the most soulful and powerful blues singers in the business today, black or white; his blues harp playing is second to none for creativity, drive and excitement. He's shared the stage with some of the biggest names in blues over the years, including Big Joe Turner, Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, Lowell Fulson, Jimmy Witherspoon, John Lee Hooker, Pee Wee Crayton, and Johnny Adams. They've all known what the rest of the blues world is about to find out: Mitch Kashmar is a force to be reckoned with in the blues.

"Nickels & Dimes" is certain to be Kashmar's breakthrough into the mainstream of roots and blues. Under the direction of Delta Groove Productions head Randy Chortkoff, Mitch is teamed with West Coast blues guitar pioneer Junior Watson, plus the all-star rhythm section of Richard Innes and Ronnie James Weber, and pianist Bob Welsh. The end result of this outstanding combination of talent is one of the deepest-rooted, hardest-swinging, funkiest blues outfits you're likely to come across - and one that is perfectly tailored to Mitch Kashmar's finely honed blend of old school blues tradition and modern power and sophistication. Season the whole mix with a few decades of experience as a bandleader, and the end result is one of the most exciting blues releases of the year. So sit back, turn it up, and make the 'discovery' for yourself - Mitch is the real deal.

Mitch Kashmar (2008) -Live at Labatt

Artist: Mitch Kashmar
Album: Live at Labatt
Released: 2008
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 155 MB

Mitch's blues harp playing is second to none for creativity, drive and excitement. And he's also just as witty and imaginative in the role of songwriter. He's shared the stage with some of the biggest names in blues over the years with Stevie Ray Vaughan paying him the ultimate compliment given from one musician to another: "Can I sit in?"

Moving on to a solo career recording "Crazy Mixed-Up World" in '99, Kashmar started making a name for himself and touring with his own band but it wasn't until his 2005 effort "Nickels & Dimes", featuring guitar great Junior Watson on Delta Groove Music's label, that his stock really began to rise. Kashmar was recognized two consecutive years in a row by the Blues Music Awards with nominations in 2006 as Best New Artist Debut and followed in 2007 as Best Instrumentalist - Harmonica. ~Delta Groove Productions
